Symposium Seminar Descriptions
Speakers and topics are subject to change.
Eimeria Macusaniensis and Mycoplasma Haemolama
Toni Cotton, DVM
Commonly referred to as "e mac" and "epe", these two parasites are dreaded words in the alpaca industry. This session will include a description of each parasite, the clinical disease, pathology in the patient, diagnosis and current treatments for alpacas.
Reproductive Ultrasound
Toni Cotton, DVM
This session will include a description of current ultrasound equipment available and its application for reproductive work in alpacas. Dr. Cotton will show a series of ultrasound images of the reproductive tract of male and female alpacas and show the application and uses in a reproductive practice. There will be an emphasis on pregnancy diagnosis and the stages of pregnancy. The equipment will be available at the symposium to view and Dr. Cotton is working on having company representatives available during the vet day.
Reproductive Case Presentations in the Female Alpaca
Toni Cotton, DVM
This session will begin with a step by step approach to working up a reproductively challenged female. Dr. Cotton will also include a brief discussion on reproductive hormones that are beneficial to test when working on problem animals. Several cases will be presented which will include congenital and "management" induced. We hope to be able to have animals available for live demonstrations.
Questions and Answers with Dr. Cebra
Dr. Chris Cebra, DVM, Oregon State University
The seminar will be an open forum where owners/breeders can ask Dr. Cebra questions on camelid health issues. Here is a chance for some "free" vet advice!

Expected Progeny Differences (EPD)
Brett Kaysen, PhD, Professor, Colorado State University
A relatively new topic for the alpaca industry, EPD has been used for years in most major livestock industries. Using this method of quantitative genetics for breeding decisions, dramatic increases in the quality of cattle, swine and sheep have been produced. Learn how this topic can be used in the alpaca industry.
Determining the Best Use of Your Alpaca Fiber
Wini Labrecque, SWF Fiber Innovations
This presentation will cover understanding what you have in your fiber and how best to utilize it for end use. End use may be processing it on your own through mini mills, contributing to fiber coops or fiber pools or developing product for retail sales. We will cover fleece properties of importance in processing, options for various parts of the fleece as well as end product packaging, labeling laws and new product development. The talk will wrap up with a discussion on future possibilities and trends in the textile industry.
What’s so great about alpaca – debunking the fleece!
Polly Michaelis, AOBA Certified Judge
We all know that alpaca is fabulous, but why? This session will take a look at the fleece from the skin up, discuss it’s relationship to other fibers and take some of the mystery out of the "terminology", the structure and the judging.
